Running and Handling a Search in Urban Locating Online

A. Start Line Behavior

  • A verbal cue (e.g., “Find it!”) may be given.
  • The dog must pass through the start line.

B. Encouraging Independent Searching

✔ Handlers may use light verbal encouragement but must not direct the dog to the quarry.
Avoid body positioning or eye contact that may cue the dog.
✔ The handler should wait for a clear alert before making the call.

C. Calling the Alert and Rewarding

  • The handler must verbally call “Yes” once the dog has clearly indicated the quarry.
  • The dog may be rewarded at the quarry location after the call is made.

🚫 Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Leading the dog to the quarry (e.g., standing near the hide).
  • Calling “Yes” before the dog fully alerts.
  • Crossing the start line during the search.
