How to Submit a Medical Accommodation Request

Overview

At NASDA, we believe in celebrating canine versatility and fostering an inclusive competition environment where all teams have the opportunity to participate. We recognize that both handlers and dogs may have medical conditions requiring accommodations to compete safely and fairly. This module provides a step-by-step guide on how to request a medical accommodation in NASDA.

What is a Medical Accommodation?

A medical accommodation is an approved modification to competition procedures that ensures a handler or dog can compete on equal footing while maintaining the integrity of NASDA events. Accommodations do not provide an unfair advantage but allow teams to perform to the best of their ability when medical limitations are present.

Examples of Accommodations

  • For Handlers: Use of assistive devices, use of a human assistant, modification / clarification of judging involving physical assistance or line handling.
  • For Dogs: Use of assistive devices, modification / clarification of judging involving physical assistance or line handling, alternative indication method, clarification of dog movement changes.

How to Submit a Medical Accommodation Request

  1. Prepare Your Request
    • Clearly state the medical condition (no need to disclose sensitive details—just the necessary impact on competition).
    • Explain the specific accommodation(s) being requested.
    • If applicable, provide a note from a licensed veterinarian confirming the need for accommodation.
  2. Submit Your Request
    • Medical accommodation requests should be submitted in writing to NASDA via a dog’s individual dashboard. Human medical accommodations can be submitted via the same method.
    • Requests should be submitted before the competition whenever possible to allow adequate review time.
  3. NASDA Review Process
    • The NASDA team will review your request to ensure it aligns with fair competition guidelines.
    • If needed, additional details may be requested.
    • Approved accommodations will be documented and communicated to the handler and event officials.
  4. Day of Competition
    • Notify the trial secretary or judge that an approved accommodation is in place.
    • Judges and event officials will ensure the accommodation is implemented appropriately.

Key Considerations

  • Accommodations must not compromise safety or interfere with another competitor’s experience.
  • Requests are evaluated on a case-by-case basis and are subject to review at any time.
  • Accommodations may be temporary or permanent.
  • Handlers are responsible for ensuring accommodations align with NASDA’s rules and regulations.

Conclusion

NASDA is committed to providing an accessible and welcoming environment for all competitors. If you or your dog require a medical accommodation, we encourage you to submit a request as early as possible. By working together, we can ensure that every team has the opportunity to showcase their skills and enjoy the sport of scent detection.
