Handling Multiple Dogs at the Regional

Image: An example of the “dogless” blind at the 2024 Invitational in Millarville, AB.
Because all runs are blind, each handler may only handle one dog per sport per round. Owners may bring or utilize additional handlers for their other qualified dogs, provided those handlers are not already running a dog on the same course.
Requirements for Additional Handlers:
- The additional handler must sign the competition waivers and release of liability.
- The additional handler must be in good standing with NASDA.
- Any changes to the second handler must be declared prior to the start of the course.
Scheduling Considerations:
- Whenever possible, dogs from the same household or sharing a vehicle will be scheduled to run back-to-back to reduce conflicts when moving to the decompression area.
- Handlers must notify trial officials before the start of the course if a change in the second handler is needed.
Example:
Alex has two dogs, Spot and Fluffy.
- Spot qualified in Trailing & Locating I.
- Fluffy qualified in Trailing & Locating II.
- Alex may handle either Spot or Fluffy in each round of Trailing & Locating.
- Alex’s friend Jordan may handle the second dog but must meet all handler requirements.
- To minimize transition time, Spot and Fluffy will be scheduled back-to-back whenever possible.
