2026 NASDA Invitational Championship

Specialty & Community Awards

These awards celebrate far more than scores. They recognize extraordinary partnerships, sportsmanship, perseverance, community, and the remarkable dogs and people who make NASDA so special.

Please join us in celebrating this year’s specialty and community award recipients—and in thanking the generous individuals and groups who made these awards possible.

Community & Legacy Awards

The No Dog Left Behind Award

Presented to Cate and Nova

This award was created especially for this Invitational—and we sincerely hope we never need to present another one quite like it.

As many of you know, one of our Invitational dogs, Comrade, went missing during the event. Our community immediately came together, with so many incredible people stepping forward to search, coordinate, share information, and help bring him home safely. We are profoundly grateful to every person who assisted.

There is one team we believe deserves very special recognition. When their skills were needed most, they stepped up and put their exceptional trailing and tracking abilities to work—not for points, placements, or titles, but to help find one of their fellow competitors.

For using their remarkable partnership and talents to help bring Comrade safely home, we are incredibly proud to present the first—and hopefully only—No Dog Left Behind Award to Cate and Nova!

Spirit of NASDA Award

Presented to Junior Handler Josie and Trooper

The Spirit of NASDA Award is presented to an Invitational team that embodies NASDA’s dedication to the love and partnership between dog and human while demonstrating extraordinary sportsmanship.

During the Invitational, Josie faced a handling decision that any of us would have struggled to make. She chose to withdraw from the competition because it was in Trooper’s best interest.

Choosing to place your dog’s needs ahead of your own hopes is one of the most difficult decisions a handler can make. Josie demonstrated tremendous courage, strength of character, and, above all, unconditional love for her dog.

Josie and Trooper showed us what it truly means to embody the Spirit of NASDA. We are honored to recognize them with the Spirit of NASDA Award and a $300 scholarship.

Walter Award

Presented to Kathy and Stout, and Eryn and Vixen

One of the things that makes NASDA unique is our commitment to making dog sports accessible to every team. One way we honor that commitment is through our accommodation program, which preserves the integrity of competition while providing appropriate support for the individual needs of dogs and handlers.

Although accommodations have been part of NASDA from the beginning, the Walter Award was created to celebrate a very special team that overcame extraordinary challenges to become a championship team: Kathy and Walter.

Walter was a little Dachshund who never saw himself as different—and because he didn’t, neither could we. Although he was mostly blind and lived with scoliosis and significant neurological challenges, Walter inspired all of us to meet every obstacle with confidence, determination, and, when necessary, an ankle bite.

Each year, the Walter Award, donated by the Clooney and Walter Canine Medical Assistance Fund, recognizes a team that inspires us every time they set paw on the field.

This year’s recipient earned more than 3,800 points, 38 QQs, and seven QQQs during the 2025 competition season—proving that different needs do not diminish a team’s ability to compete, succeed, and find tremendous joy in the game.

This dog’s mom competes with humor and grace, even when things do not go exactly according to plan. She also supports other teams—often in ways they may never know—working tirelessly to ensure that dogs and handlers with different needs have every opportunity to thrive, both within NASDA and in life.

Perhaps the most delightful part of presenting this award is that this year’s recipient has absolutely no idea it is coming. She is so kind and humble that she would likely want another team to receive the recognition.

For their remarkable partnership, sportsmanship, perseverance, and unwavering support of the NASDA community, we are incredibly pleased to present the Walter Award to Kathy and Stout.

Presented to Eryn and her Border Collie, Vixen

One of the most beautiful things about the NASDA community is the extraordinary love we share—not only for our dogs, but also for one another.

In a gesture that perfectly reflects the generosity, humility, and Spirit of NASDA for which Kathy and Stout are so deeply loved, Kathy asked that we also recognize another remarkable team whose achievements through NASDA’s accommodation program placed them close behind Kathy and Stout.

We have chosen to honor both teams.

It is with full—and heavy—hearts that we recognize Eryn and her Border Collie, Vixen, as an additional recipient of the Walter Award.

Vixen was deaf, and Eryn’s dedication to her knew no bounds. They came to the line with joy, determination, and a smile, showing us again and again that love and partnership can find a way through any challenge. Their experiences also helped shape the standardized language NASDA now uses for accommodations for dogs who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Together, Eryn and Vixen achieved so much. In 2025, Vixen was the No. 1 Border Collie in Urban Locating Master Champion. She earned an invitation to the Showcase as the No. 27 MULCH dog, was ranked No. 5 Border Collie in Lost Item Recovery Level III, and earned her MULCH in October 2025.

Tragically, we lost Eryn earlier this year in a terrible accident while she was trying to save her dogs during a hike. Our hearts may never fully recover from such a devastating loss.

We are profoundly grateful for the opportunity to celebrate Eryn and Vixen and the remarkable life and partnership they shared. Their achievements, perseverance, and devotion to one another embody everything the Walter Award was created to honor.

Eryn and Vixen showed us that differences do not define what a team can accomplish—and that love, courage, and partnership truly have no limits.

A Message of Gratitude

The Invitational That Almost Wasn’t

A thank-you to the competitors, volunteers, trial team, and community who made the 2026 NASDA Invitational possible.

The year 2026 has not been kind to many people in our community. There has been illness, injury, unimaginable loss, and more than a few moments when simply continuing to move forward felt like an accomplishment.

Then devastating wildfires on the West Coast threatened an event taking place all the way across the country here in the beautiful Northeast. Equipment, ribbons, awards, plans, and months of preparation were suddenly in jeopardy.

But still, we are here.

That is the thing about the NASDA community.

Over the past ten years, NASDA has grown into far more than an organization that celebrates the remarkable versatility of dogs. It has become a community that recognizes the extraordinary partnerships we build with them—and the friendships, compassion, sportsmanship, and sense of belonging we build with one another.

The things can be replaced.

What cannot be replaced is what you and your dogs did to earn your place here. What cannot be replaced are the memories you made, the people who showed up for one another, and the choice this community made again and again to say, “We get it, and we are still going to celebrate our dogs and each other.”

I am so incredibly proud of every competitor who stepped to the line this week. I am equally proud of the extraordinary trial team that made certain there was a line to step to.

With Our Deepest Gratitude

Please join me in recognizing the remarkable people whose work, creativity, patience, and determination made this Invitational possible.

Our Exhibitors and Volunteers

You met every change with patience, flexibility, generosity, and a willingness to help.

A Very Special Thank You

Most of All, Martha

Martha stepped into an enormous role and tackled every challenge with enthusiasm, determination, and, somehow, her sense of humor still intact.

There were an unbelievable number of moving parts involved in making this event happen. Martha held those parts together, adapted when they moved again, and made sure all of you were in the very best hands.

Martha, I cannot thank you enough for not only being an exceptional representative for NASDA, but for being an amazing and wonderful friend.

At the beginning of this week, I asked everyone to have fun, be kind to one another, celebrate each other’s successes, and, most importantly, enjoy your dogs.

You did exactly that.

A Beautiful Reminder of Who We Are

This Invitational may have almost not happened. Instead, it became a beautiful reminder of who we are.

We show up.
We adapt.
We take care of one another.
We celebrate every dog, every partnership, and every hard-earned moment.

And still, we are here.

Thank you all for making that possible.
