Obstacles should use a 12–18-inch straight section of the tunnel and cannot be placed between the final turn and the quarry to avoid overwhelming the dog near the end.
Only one obstacle may be included per run, selected from the options below:
1. Water:
A shallow pan of water is dug beneath the tunnel floor, requiring the dog to pass through it.
Water depth should range from 1/2 inch to 1.5 inches, ensuring it is safe and manageable for all dogs.
2. Sand Trap:
A mound of sand, dirt, or other natural debris measuring 4–6 inches high is placed within the tunnel for the dog to navigate over or through.
3. Roots:
A section of hanging hose or cabling is securely attached to the top of the tunnel to mimic the feel of roots. The roots must be safely secured to avoid injury or entanglement.
4. Log:
A log or similar object, no more than 4 inches in diameter, is placed crosswise along the floor of the tunnel for the dog to pass over. The log must be securely anchored to prevent shifting during the run.
