Den Hunt Level II Specifications
Den Hunt Level II (DH-II) challenges dogs to further develop their skills and confidence while demonstrating their willingness to work live quarry in a confined space. This level introduces additional complexity through a trailing to the entrance, longer tunnel, multiple turns, and a single obstacle, encouraging dogs to hone their problem-solving and persistence.
Search Area Requirements:
The search area must be of sufficient size and space to allow a 100 – 150′ long trail to the tunnel entrance.
Trailing & Locating Component:
The search area for Den Hunt Level II (DH-II) must be designed to challenge the dog’s scenting and trailing abilities leading up to the tunnel entrance. Proper setup ensures a realistic and rewarding experience that mirrors natural hunting scenarios.
Search Area Requirements:
- Size and Space: The search area must be large enough to accommodate a 100 to 150-foot trail leading to the tunnel entrance.
- Visibility: The tunnel structure should not be readily visible from the start line, encouraging the dog to rely on scent rather than sight.
Trail Laying Guidelines:
- Method: The trail must be laid in the same manner as Trailing & Locating, using scent markers such as Rat Tea or a drag line to create a natural and authentic scent trail.
- Natural Layout: The trail should include realistic turns and variations to mimic the path of a quarry, guiding the dog to the tunnel entrance.
False Quarry Option:
- A false quarry may be introduced along the trail, similar to Trailing & Locating II, to add an extra layer of complexity.
- The false quarry should be placed in a way that challenges the dog to distinguish between the true trail and the distraction.
- Ensure the false quarry does not interfere with the main trail to the tunnel.
Purpose and Benefits:
The search area for DH-II encourages dogs to utilize their scenting instincts and problem-solving skills before reaching the tunnel. By incorporating a well-laid trail and optional false quarry, the experience becomes more engaging and mirrors real-world hunting scenarios. This setup prepares dogs for advanced challenges while maintaining an exciting and rewarding environment.
Tunnel Dimensions and Layout:
- Cross-Section: The tunnel must measure 9 inches by 9 inches, accommodating small earthworking dogs and others that meet this size requirement.
- Length: The tunnel must be at least 20 feet but no more than 30 feet long.
- Path: The tunnel must include two turns to challenge the dog’s scenting and navigation abilities and one obstacle to test their adaptability.
- Trapdoor: At the quarry end, a trapdoor must be included for safely removing the dog after the run.
Obstacle Specifications:
- Obstacles should use a 12–18-inch straight section of the tunnel and cannot be placed between the final turn and the quarry to avoid overwhelming the dog near the end.
- Only one obstacle may be included per run, selected from the options below:
1. Water:
- A shallow pan of water is dug beneath the tunnel floor, requiring the dog to pass through it.
- Water depth should range from 1/2 inch to 1.5 inches, ensuring it is safe and manageable for all dogs.
2. Sand Trap:
- A mound of sand, dirt, or other natural debris measuring 4–6 inches high is placed within the tunnel for the dog to navigate over or through.
3. Roots:
- A section of hanging hose or cabling is securely attached to the top of the tunnel to mimic the feel of roots. The roots must be safely secured to avoid injury or entanglement.
4. Log:
- A log or similar object, no more than 4 inches in diameter, is placed crosswise along the floor of the tunnel for the dog to pass over. The log must be securely anchored to prevent shifting during the run.
Purpose and Benefits:
DH-II builds upon the foundational skills developed in Level I by increasing the tunnel’s length and complexity, encouraging dogs to work independently and confidently. The introduction of a single obstacle enhances the challenge without overwhelming the dog, providing a rewarding opportunity for growth and skill-building in preparation for more advanced levels.
