Den Hunt Level I Specifications
Den Hunt Level I (DH-I): Tunnel Specifications
Den Hunt Level I (DH-I) offers dogs the opportunity to build their skills and confidence while demonstrating a willingness to work live quarry in a confined space. The specifications for the tunnel setup ensure a balance of challenge and accessibility for developing dogs.
Tunnel Dimensions and Layout:
- Cross-Section: The tunnel must measure 9 inches by 9 inches, accommodating small earthworking dogs and others that meet this size requirement.
- Length: The tunnel must be at least 8 feet but no more than 12 feet long, providing an appropriate challenge for this level.
- Path: The tunnel should include one turn, encouraging dogs to use their scenting and problem-solving skills without introducing unnecessary complexity. There should be no additional obstacles.
Quarry End Specifications:
- Trapdoor: At the end of the tunnel, a trapdoor must be included to safely remove the dog after working the quarry. This ensures an efficient and controlled end to the run.
- Quarry Safety: The live quarry must be securely housed in a manner that prevents direct contact while allowing the dog to interact through scent and sight.
Purpose and Benefits:
DH-I provides a safe and supportive environment for dogs to develop their instinctual abilities, build confidence in confined spaces, and learn to work independently. The inclusion of a turn adds an element of challenge, encouraging problem-solving while maintaining accessibility for novice dogs.
This level is an essential step in preparing dogs for more advanced challenges in the Den Hunt program.
